How do I know if a website is “Secure”?

Some web sites have the capability of taking advantage of a secure connection between the web site and your browser. This may be important to you, for instance, if you are entering credit card information or other personal information at a web site.

To tell if your Internet Explorer browser is viewing a secure web site, look in the lower right part of the window. There is a small box in the frame of the window to the left of the area that describes which Zone you are in (usually the Internet zone, with a globe icon). If you see a yellow padlock icon, then the web site you are viewing is a "secure web site." If the box is empty, then the web site does not have a secure connection with your browser.

Netscape also has a padlock to indicate a secure connection.

Tip-within-a-tip: You can double-click the padlock icon to view the security information about the website.

What is the function of the Search Companion in Internet Explorer 6??

A new feature of Internet Explorer 6 is the Search Companion, staring Rover, a cute but sometimes annoying hangover from Microsoft Bob (don't ask). This Search Companion is the panel that appears along the left-hand side when you click the Search button at the top of an Internet Explorer window. If you just enter in a question, or several key words in the space provided, Internet Explorer will search Microsoft's search engine (search.msn.com) for relevant pages on the Internet. You can also choose to search your own computer by clicking on the link that reads "Search this computer for files." To get back to the Internet search if you click that link, click "Search the Internet" and you will return back to the screen you started with.

Do those programs they advertise that will speed up your browser on the internet work?

Those utilities that claim to speed up your dial-up Internet access don't work and are a waste of money.

What is OPERA?

Opera is another web browser like Netscape and Explorer. It is considerably smaller and faster though. It has many interesting features also. Go to http://www.opera.com

What are Cookies?

Cookies are small files placed on your machine when you visit some web sites. They may contain things like passwords so you fan log onto the site more easily. They are NOT spy programs but useful files to help you connect to web sites more easily. You should not worry about them and certainly should not delete them.

When do I need a firewall and where can I get one?

Firewalls are necessary if you use a broadband connection (DSL, Cable, Satellite, etc.). They protect you from intrusion and attack from others on the Internet. If you have Windows XP there is a built in firewall you can use. If not, you can download Zone Alarm for free at: http://www.zonelabs.com There are two versions; the free version and the Pro version. The free version is more than sufficient for most people.

How can I find and backup my Internet Explorer "Favorites"?

Go to "My Computer" and use the Folder view. If you have the default setup, you can find your Favorites folder in the following path:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your user profile name\Favorites\

It has a "star" instead of the little manila folder icon. RIGHT click on the Favorites folder, then LEFT click on "Send to," then LEFT click on Floppy Drive. This will copy all your favorites to the floppy disk. You may also move this folder to another computer. Find the Favorites folder and replace it with the one on your floppy.

OR Open Internet Explorer and click on File and select Import and Export. This will start a Wizard that will allow you to select your Favorites to export to a floppy drive.

When I surf web pages some pictures show but I get a “red x” where other pictures should be. What causes this and how can I fix it?

The problem that you are describing can have several causes:
(1) The picture is no longer available and the web site operator has not updated the web page code.
(2) The picture file on the web site is corrupt and will not download correctly.
(3) The web browser experiences a "time-out" while downloading the page and pictures. This can be caused by a slow (underpowered) web server, web server problems, or Internet connection problems (either on your side or theirs).
(4) Your web browser cache is corrupt.
(5) You have another problem with your browser.

Numbers 1-3 are beyond your control and you can't really do anything about it. Numbers 4 & 5 could be on your end, but are not likely the cause. The following questions may help you find the cause: (1) Is this problem occurring on several sites or just a small number of sites? (2) Are the problems consistent (can you go to the same web page and get the same result)? (3) Are the sites that have this problem commercial web sites or personal web sites? If this problem is occurring often, you can clear your cache (empty your Temporary Internet Files) to see if it is a corrupt image file in your cache. Verify that Show Pictures has not been turned off in Internet Explorer: On the Tools menu, click Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab, and then verify that the Show Pictures check box is selected under Multimedia. Click OK.

The following web page has information about this problem: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=283807

I want to change to a high speed connection. Which is better DSL or cable?

If both technologies are available in your area, go with cable. It is the hands-down winner. It is faster, more reliable, doesn't have the distance restrictions and other things that cause problems with DSL. In our area Comcast and Time Warner provide very good customer service. If cable Internet is not available in your area and you can only get DSL, it is still a lot better than dial-up.

How do I alphabetize Favorites in Windows Explorer?

For some reason, Microsoft keeps how to do this a big secret. Go to “Help” on the MSIE browser and look for anything related to alphabetizing of favorites. You won’t find it. Yet, once you know, it is so simple. Here’s how:

·       Open your favorites list by clicking on the spelled-out word "Favorites" atop the MSIE browser. (You cannot do this alphabetizing by merely clicking on the Icon/Symbol for favorites.

·       You need to have the spelled-out word "Favorites" visible to click on atop your browser. So if you don't have it visible, you may have to first go to View>Toolsbars>Customize and select "Show Text Labels" in order for the spelled- out word, "Favorites," to be made visible atop your MSIE browser. Once it is, THEN you can click on it to begin the following steps:

Right-click on any site in the list. A menu opens. Left-click on "Sort by Name."

Now what about the pages listed in subfolders, if you have any? How do you alphabetize them? Same way. Click on favorites. Left-click on any folder in which you have subfolders. Its list of sites is displayed. Right click on any of the sites and from the menu select “Sort by Name.” They are now alphabetized. Keep doing this as you drill down through all your subfolders.
