To open you double click the desktop icon or single click the Quick Launch
icon. (When AOL is
installed it always puts an icon in quick launch.) This takes you to the
"SignOn" screen. There you click on the Connect button (lower right side or it may say
sign on again) You may need to put in the password first.
You get to the
internet from the Welcome screen. There is an address slot at the
top center which says "Type AOL Keywords or Web Addresses here". Click "Go" or enter key. The web site will open.
The site screen
will be three quarters of what you will see in a regular browser. There
is a red heart in the top left hand corner. Click it
to see your favorites or to add one.
The email icon is in the
top left of the Welcome screen as a mail box with a red arm up. The number of
emails is shown below it.

You know you can change window sizes, right? Well, not for all AOL windows, but you can change many of them by dragging the edges or the corners. You can also move the window around by clicking on top colored bar of a window.
If you like the changes you make and want to keep them, here are the
steps:
1. Open the Window menu on the top tool bar.
2. Choose "Remember Window Size and Position."
3. You will have to do step 2 on each window.
Next time you sign on all the windows will be retain to the changes you've made.

All of those nuggets are collected into one place:
The AOL System Information utility.
1. Click on the Windows Start button.
2. Point to Programs, point to America Online and click on AOL System
Information. (be patient, it takes a while to come up)
In the AOL System Information window, you'll see:
a.
how much memory you have,
b.
which version of Windows you're using,
c.
the browser that's on tap, and so on.
These are just what the tech-support expert ordered (or will order, when
you call for help), so you should know where to find them.

When sending pictures to AOL users, it is best to send only one per e-mail message. If you attached more than one to your message, the pictures will appear as a single "MIME" file. Tell your friend that she'll have to download them to her computer and then decode them. She can use a tool like Winzip (http://www.winzip.com) or she can go to AOL keyword "MIME" for free tools.

Using AOL 8.0
Click on Mail (gives you a dropdown menu)
Click on Address Book (opens Address Book)
Click on "Add Group" (gives you a "Manage Group" dialog window)
Step 1: Create a name for your group (type in the name you want to call the
group)
Step 2: Highlight the individual's name in the contact list window and click
the "Add" button. This puts the individual's address in the window on the
right, where you are building the group)
Step 3: This step can be used to manually type in an address of someone who
is not contained as an individual in your Address Book.
Step 4: Share the group? (Check "No")
Step 5: Click on "Save"
TIP:
You can build a group "Family" & another group "Friends". You could then
build a third group "All Contacts" by inserting only the 2 names of the "Family" &
"Friends" groups. In other words, a group can be multiple contacts, groups
or both.
